Technical Death Metal A.K.A Progressive Death Metal or in short Tech Death. An excellent Sub-genre of Death Metal which gave a new direction to Death Metal Movement in this world.Experimental bands like Atheist,Death,Cynic,Gorguts had proved that Death Metal is not just some noise shit with Loud Distortion, blastbeats and Brutal growls.Sometimes i wonder that this sub genre is more like a slap on the face of those critics who claimed that "Death Metal will always remain underground due to it's non-melodic sound and anti social nature".The pioneer bands experimented with a variety of song structures, riff structures, multiple beat patterns from other great genres like Jazz,Classical,Middle Eastern Folk etc. They established this impressive sub genre as a complex and varied musical style.Music has no limitations, does'nt matter if you are a death metal musician or a jazz musician. That's what Atheist had proved.
Combining elements of Odd time signatures and multiple variations of jazz with the brutal and heavy riffs of death metal with a little symphonic influence from classical music. It incorporates a variety of influences from other genres of music to make music which is thought to be quite unexpected and almost impossible. As a result, the appearance of chaos surrounded by a thick and catchy groove.People often goes like-"How the hell can anyone play dave weckl and cannibal corpse at the same time? Are you out of your senses?".On the other hand, critics goes like-"Bullshit,Jazz music is different and Death metal is different. It will sound shitty.I won't even listen to the first song."
I have hardly seen any technical death metal band following the "Chorus-Pre Chorus-Verse-Bridge-Solo-Chorus" law.You can hear impressive intros, mindblowing guitar solos, sudden break, too much of odd time signatures then suddenly grinding extreme speed blastbeats and harmonisation in power riffs.Still not getting???Check out this German Band called Necrophagist.
Technical Death Metal originally started in the late 80s and 90s.Bands like Suffocation,Monstrosity and Vital Remains were doing many experimentations to give a new life to Death Metal. But it was actually the band Atheist who proved themselves as "Fathers Of Progressive Death Metal" with their debut album "Piece Of Time" which got released in the year 1990.Not to mention the mighty Gorguts who were also responsible for giving fuel to this flame.Unfortunately, these great talented bands came into existence before the time.So their creations never got listed in the mainstream chart.
Then there comes the mighty Death.Chuck Schuldiner. You know this name. You remember his face. You know his contribution to the Technical Death Metal. So this band and Chuck need no introduction at all.Honestly and Frankly,I think Tech Death became a little famous when their album "Human" got released in 1991.Metalheads and critics were stunned after hearing Chuck's creations. With songs like "Lack of comprehension","Flattening of emotions" & "See through dreams","Spirit Crusher" they made holes in every metalhead's skull.
Nowdays, new bands like Necrophagist,Modulus,Sleep Terror,Amogh Symphony are keeping the flame alive and this genre is getting more and more advanced but still ..... time will say everything.
Shall post more
